Glenapp Castle – Luxury Castle Hotel – Ayrshire

Located in Ballantrae, Ayrshire, Glenapp Castle dates back to the 1870s and was designed by the celebrated Edinburgh architect David Bryce.

Now, it is one of Scotland’s finest luxury hotels with several notable awards in the hospitality industry.

The current owners had the ambition and foresight to turn Glenapp Castle into one of Scotland’s most enchanting and leading hotel venues in the UK. Among the awards the Castle has received in recent years is the prestigious Sunday Times “Best Place to Stay 2020”.

The latest round of upgrades and renovations to the venue involved the complete redevelopment of the third-floor area into a luxury suite named The Endeavour, and the Glenapp Castle Penthouse Apartment.

The suite boasts its own independent butler, private elevator, sauna, spa, multiple en-suite bedrooms and kitchen and dining areas.

Passive fire protection upgrades were also carried out by Worksmart Fire Door Inspection throughout the castle. These upgrades helped bring the castle’s fire safety measures up to modern standards.

New fire doors, access hatches, sprinkler systems and new structural timbers were installed, along with a vast array of Passive Fire Protection measures.

The Worksmart teams ensure the venue was able to retain its historic charm while achieving modern safety standards.

Specialist stone masons were brought in to help and new timber beams and calcium silicate boards had to be installed in various locations. A sprinkler system was also installed. Thanks to the hard work of Worksmart Fire Door Inspection, Glenapp Castle now meets all standards for fire door compliance.

This was a truly unique project to work on with many difficult challenges. The COVID-19 also had its say, delaying works and forcing some of our operatives to stay on-site to ensure travel was kept to a minimum.

Hairmyres Hospital – North Lanarkshire

Worksmart began full refurbishment works at Hairmyres Hospital in North Lanarkshire on an initial phased working basis. This was part of an overall 20-week programme alongside WMQ – the principal contractors on the job for their clients ISS Facility Services.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays on the works, before safe progression was able to take place with WMQ and ISS – the facilities management provider.

The project included the refurbishment of Theatre 8 and its adjoining clinical rooms which are connected to the theatre.

The refurbishment works had to be carried out while the hospital’s other theatres were still in use. Because of this, the project required fire-rated temporary access. We followed this by removing all plant and fabric in the zones.

Worksmart removed all ceilings, walls and floors, before reinstating them with added structural steel and additional Passive Fire Protection measures above ceilings.

Worksmart supplied a full joinery package which included specialist cabinetry, white rock to walls, Ames taping & decoration. Worksmart also installed stylish and low maintenance vinyl flooring.

The services aspect to the project accounted for the majority of its value and included: Containment, low voltage distribution, general small power and mechanical power, lighting, fire alarms, access control, lighting, structured cabling, earthing, air handling units, LTHW, chilled water, compressed air systems for dental gases, mains cold water, domestic waste, domestic hot & cold water, air conditioning, natural gas, heat recovery units, mini fan coil units and split systems.

Due to the project coming at such a difficult time, the complexities made it challenging. However, thanks to the hard work of all of WMQ and ISS, we were able to make it a success for the end user clients.

Worksmart were proud to be listed as ‘Essential Workers’ during this time. And play our part in supporting our NHS.

Standard Life – Office Refurbishment – Edinburgh Causewayside

Hollis Global commissioned us to undertake a refurbishment of the 4th floor of Standard Life’s Edinburgh Causewayside office. Standard Life are world renowned property investors with offices all over the globe.

The job involved the full strip out of existing lighting and cabling throughout the open plan office space, including the elevator, lobby and bathrooms.

Once this was accomplished, Worksmart Contracts installed new lighting throughout the fourth floor, as well as new circuit wiring from the existing distribution boards.

The main point of focus for the refurbishment was the toilets. The client wanted a refreshed bathroom space which would include new flooring and sanitaryware. The bathroom refurbishment would include all new: panels, cubicles, vanity units, WC’s and urinals. The existing fixtures and fittings would also be replaced with new sensor taps, mirrors and wash hand basins.

Floor tiles from the Porcelanosa Blanco range were chosen to ensure a high-end finish within the bathroom.

Elsewhere Worksmart fitted new carpeting to the lobby area of the office, cleaned the existing ceiling tiles and carried out some general decoration works to enhance the overall look and feel of the office.

This refurbishment project in Edinburgh represented another success for Worksmart. Working alongside Hollis Global to complete this Edinburgh office refurbishment for Standard Life was a real pleasure and we hope to work with them again in future.

Austin-Smith:Lord – Bothwell Street, Glasgow City Centre

The Client, Austin-Smith:Lord, was looking to move its operation from a previous office space on St Vincent Street to a more suitable location on Bothwell Street. Highly renowned architects themselves, we were well aware that the client would accept nothing less than a sharp office fit-out with a premium finish.

With the new office fit-out taking place on the 4th floor of a Glasgow City Centre building, it presented some difficulties. As usual though, Worksmart Contracts welcomed the challenge. Due to less people being present in the office due to the COVID-19 situation, it allowed us to work in a less disruptive manner. This was positive for both Worksmart and the client.

Worksmart’s team completed the new office fit-out to a very high spec. Included within the project was an adapted glass office area, which featured a TV wall for running training courses, seminars and other events. A new tea prep area was also installed, providing the staff at Austin-Smith:Lord with the vital facilities needed throughout the working day.

Elsewhere, new partitions were created to house important filing cabinets and furniture had to be transported from the old office. The client drew up their own drawings on the project, and it was a pleasure working with George Reynolds.

The feeling was mutual, as George praised Worksmart’s Project Manager Gary McCaul for his effort, communication and overall management of the job, adding that he is a fantastic ambassador for Worksmart Contracts.
Overall a highly successful project finished to a very
high standard

Glasgow Day Surgery Centre

Glasgow Day Surgery Centre Refurbishment

Worksmart Contracts were excited to be approached by a client seeking to create a new flagship surgery in Glasgow. The client, a plastic surgeon, set up his own private clinic more than 10 years ago.

The client acquired a new location in Glasgow with the goal of adding another cosmetic surgery to his portfolio. It was clear from the outset that the client was seeking to match the high standards achieved in his other cosmetic surgery practice locations within some of the UK’s largest cities.

A full fit-out and refurbishment was needed in order to bring the premises up to standard.

The client initially engaged with builders he had used before; however, he soon realised the project required an expert team of contractors with experience of larger projects. When this became apparent, a close friend recommended Worksmart Contracts.

Naturally, once approached, Worksmart Contracts were eager to take on the challenge. Working with the client was an excellent experience. His ambition and passion for the project was evident from the beginning and he remained involved throughout.

The client wanted to create a clinic in which the patient experience was as comfortable and relaxing as possible. This would mean building a facility which resembled more of a small day-case hospital.

This would maximise the experience of the patient, allowing them to undergo treatments in a safe and dignified environment, featuring the latest technological innovations and medical equipment.

Complete with a full operating room, this project had to be finished to the extremely high hygiene and quality standards necessary in a medical facility. This challenge brought out the very best in Worksmart Contracts and the standard of the finished project is exemplary.

The clinic will perform clinical training, consultations and treatments across a number of newly created clinical rooms.
