Worksmart takes on the Mighty Killie at Rugby Park

After the Tender process Worksmart worked with the Board of Directors at Kilmarnock Football Club and their Architects, Thomson Hunter through a Value Engineering process to ensure the Client had the best Design and Specification at the best price possible and Worksmart Contracts were awarded the Project.

With such a success at Kilmarnock Football Club this season the Kilmarnock Board wanted to invest in the Club to Refurbish two of the Corporate Lounges to attract further support and investment for the Club for the Board again to further invest in the Team.

The Chairman’s Club on the first floor, which is a unique corporate facility where both the home and visiting teams Directors attend the Chairman’s Club along with the Chairman’s Club Members to join them at, needed to be refurbished and developed to create a new more current design and facility with better space planning and bar facilities to serve the visiting  members. At the same time efficiencies and betterment was required in lighting, heating and cooling to take the facility where it needs to be for the next ten years. With bespoke joinery work to the bar, display cabinets, and the likes the Club wanted to ensure that the design, led by Thomson Hunter Architects was there to be admired and enjoyed by everyone attending the Chairman’s Club.

The same case is similar for the Executive Club on the ground floor with the upgrade and refurbishment of the current facility to again take it forward and be current for the next ten years. The facility is there to provide a first class experience for the members to enjoy and entertain in.

This is another successful and high profile project for the Worksmart Team to get their teeth into over the closed season and to provide facilities for the Club, the Board and the members all to enjoy for the years to come. Well worth while having a look at the Kilmarnock Football Club website to have a look at the facilities and packages available.

Good luck to Kilmarnock Football Club for next coming season and we are very much looking forward to using the facilities and entertaining our Clients next season and beyond.

Nicola Sturgeon opens Worksmart’s Brussels Scotland House Project

Nicola Sturgeon visited and opened an expanded and refurbished Scotland House in the heart of Brussels’ Schuman district looking over the European Parliament and official buildings. Scotland’s First Minister stated that the facility is there to help Scottish Businesses and increase Scotland’s presence across the EU. This will play a major part in representing Scotland across the whole of the EU.

Worksmart Contracts were there in person again to meet the First Minister and hear first-hand the First Minister congratulating the Scotland House Team. The First Minister stated that the newly refurbished and extended facility was excellent and a very impressive building with the design and quality of the highest level in line with the recent project at Scotland House London.

Worksmart are delighted to have provided the fit-out and refurbishment of both Scotland House Projects in London last year and now Brussels and are very proud of our involvement and input along with the Scottish Government Client Team, Mitie Facilities providing full solutions with c2:concepts Architects & Designers, Dave Kerr Associates Services Consultants and Graham & Sibbald Cost Consultants. Another great success in team work and delivery.

The Project was facilitated over two phases over eighteen weeks on site and delivered in advance of the hand over date on budget with quality and design in all aspects. Working in a live and secure site in Brussels took precise planning and management to mitigate and reduce issues and we are delighted to see our planning paid off.

Working with every trade involved in a current day fast track interior fit-out & refurbishment project we delivered what is an outstanding facility in the heart of Brussels all the way from Scotland.

Another very proud Moment for the Worksmart Team and one which we will all hold in high regard as one of those excellent projects which we pride ourselves on. Always a pleasure to hear direct from our Clients and indeed in person with the Scottish First Minister that the quality is there to be seen and that we worked hand in hand with the team from start to finish in Scotland and in Brussels.

Billy Bowie Special Projects are a leading U.K. Company specialising in Haulage, Jetting, Skip Hire, Recycling, Composting, Vehicle Sales & Hire amongst other services. As an Ayrshire Company, with a well-known owner at the helm Mr Billy Bowie, it has been great to watch their significant growth in Scotland and throughout its U.K. Office and networks.

Billy Bowie Special Projects needed to extend their Ayrshire Office Facilities to provide additional Office Space within a purpose designed single storey highly efficient extension incorporating refurbishment works to the existing office facility. BBSP wanted to ensure  the quality and precision of the works and that the Project Build and Refurbishment were completed on time in a facility which was live 24/7 with office staff through the wall and scores of wagons rolling in and out of the yard morning, noon and night.

With Munro Architects in the Design seat, Grossart Associates in the Structural Engineer role and Armour Cost Consultants, we all worked seamlessly as the Clients Design team throughout the process, the team having had experience of working with BBSP on previous projects together.

Worksmart secured the Project through competitive tender and got to work straight away on a very demanding Programme. Worksmart Re-Join the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce

We were thrilled to share with you some very exciting news this week. No, we’re not talking about the fact that we now have almost a thousand likes on Facebook (although that is a close second), but that we are now member of the Ayrshire Chamber once again. We are delighted to have re-joined this organisation, which we explain more about below.

First, a bit about what the Chamber of Commerce does for interior fit-out and refurbishment companies like Worksmart. They are an organisation focused on helping encourage business growth in the local area and across the entire business environment in Ayrshire. The Chamber achieve this by organising several informative training events throughout the year, on topics including social media and the upcoming introduction of GDPR legislation. These ensure that all businesses in Ayrshire can stay on top of all changes in law, as well as remain at the forefront of their industry. Also, the Chamber provide networking opportunities and informal events for its members, such as their annual football tournament (which we attended last year).

For Worksmart, the choice to become a member of the Ayrshire Chamber again was obvious. For one, it will give us a platform to showcase our fit-out and refurbishment projects to the Ayrshire business market. This will give us a greater market coverage, both within Worksmart’s home of Ayrshire and the wider business market. Also, the Ayrshire Chamber have a strong knowledge of various business subjests, shown by the variety of training they offer.. Finally, it will allow Worksmart to become integrated into the wider business community and build relationships with like-minded businesses.

Overall, being a member of the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce will hopefully bring many number of exciting opportunities to Worksmart. From the chance to partake in some exciting events to the ability to showcase our projects, we can’t wait to see the impact of our membership. A Coffee and a Chat with… Keir Anderson, Commercial Manager

One of the key divisions within the business here at Worksmart is our commercial team, who are on hand to ensure that all our interior fit-out and refurbishment projects run smoothly. Kieran sat down with Keir Anderson, our Commercial Manager, to talk about his role in the company.

KJ: Hi Keir, what are some of your key responsibilities within Worksmart?

KA: I am responsible for the commercial functions of our projects working along with our operations and estimating department. I am based out of our Edinburgh office and have a key focus on projects in the East of Scotland but I am also involved in projects across the Central Belt.

KJ: How did you enter the world of construction?

KA: I studied Quantity Surveying at Edinburgh Napier University on a day release basis, while working as a trainee surveyor with Balfour Beatty Construction and BAM. This allowed me to gain on the job experience, as well as achieving my honours degree. I joined Worksmart in July 2017 and immediately began working on several high profile projects.

KJ: What does a typical day look like for you?

KA: My typical day involves ensuring smooth operation of my projects, which can entail visiting sites, cost reporting, placing sub-contract orders and liaising with our clients and supply chain.

KJ: There have been significant skill shortages in the UK interiors sector. How do you feel we can improve this?

KA: It is absolutely crucial to make the world of fit-out and refurbishment as appealing to the younger generation as possible from an early age. I believe the industry as a whole needs to improve and increase its engagement with children and schools to demonstrate the opportunities that are available within our industry.

KJ: Finally, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

KA: During my free time I like to enjoy family time with my young daughter, watching sport and travelling.

Working Digital 2018 – The Obligatory Post-Event Blog

Well, after much planning and hype, Working Digital 2018 is finally in the rear-view mirror. This was a truly fantastic event for the entire Worksmart team, as well as the wider world of Ayrshire business. We were treated to two nights of interesting and engaging speakers, and we will tell you a bit more below.

Night One opened with an introduction via satellite from LA (which was a lot sunnier than Kilmarnock where the event was held), with renowned social media consultant and author Jay Baer providing an excellent start to the event. Our first speaker of the evening was Alan Stewart of Ofcom, who provided a fascinating talk on the use of technology among the younger generation. With statistics such as 21% of 3-4 year olds have their own tablet and almost 4 in 10, 8-11 year olds, it shows the huge potential of marketing in the future. After this talk, we were treated to a talk by previous Working Digital speaker, Gillian Reith of Three Sisters Bake. They have experienced significant growth since the last event, with Three Sisters Bake now having two cafes throughout Scotland.

The final speaker for night 1 was Helena Langdon, the Head of Digital at Innocent Smoothies, who are renowned for their excellent social media content. She explained how Innocent built their online presence, and how it differs from other companies. This was an excellent and entertaining presentation, with plenty of insight into how to bring out the more human side of your brand.

Night Two began with an engaging chat from Joanna Steele of Dimax, who has worked with some massive brands including Argos and Mothercare. She spoke about the various ways technology can be used to enhance your physical retail space, such as tablets to allow for more efficient ordering. After this, Robert Gillespie of Swipii provided information on customer retention, as well as giving practical tips on how to gain new customers. His story of helping Swipii grow was particularly interesting. Finally, the last speaker of Working Digital 2018 was Stephen Whitelaw of Orthic Consulting, who have valuable insight into the future of commerce. This was both a fascinating and frightening talk, showing the lengths that organisations are going to in order to gain insight on their customers.

Over the two days of Working Digital, Worksmart were exhibiting, which allowed us to distribute our brand new brochures. It also gave visitors the chance to try our VR headset, prior to the prize draw. This was won by Martin from Ayrshire College, who was thrilled to win such a fantastic prize.

Overall, Working Digital 2018 was a fantastic event. It gave us the opportunity to project the Worksmart brand in front of a new audience, as well as learning lots about digital marketing. We would like to thank East Ayrshire Council for organising, and a special thanks must be given to Colin Kelly and Gary Ennis for their excellent hosting, and we can’t wait for the next one.

My Journey as an Apprentice

Hi, I’m Kieran but you’ve already guessed that by my photo at the top of the page. I’m the current happy, smiley face (or grumpy one, depending on who you ask) of Worksmart, and have been their Digital Marketing Apprentice for the last 14 months. I’ll tell you a bit about my journey, and some the things I’m responsible for.

I left school halfway through sixth year in January 2017, when the opportunity arose for me to join the Worksmart team after two interviews. I had been applying for several apprenticeships at that time, however Worksmart were the one that appealed to me the most. I have had a passion for business – and in particular marketing – since I started secondary school, so this was the perfect fit for me. I started here on January 26th 2017, and haven’t looked back since.

I have been largely responsible for managing all our social media channels for the last year, including our Facebook and Twitter. This has resulted in several campaigns over the time, including the #25DaysofWorksmart posts in December. I have also been heavily involved in building Worksmart’s strong relationship with the FIS, creating content such as an interview with Amanda Scott.

Another favourite part of my job has been getting to grips with web design, which is something I had very little knowledge of prior to joining Worksmart. However, following some excellent training from Ryan at Solutions on Demand (and a few 404 errors along the way), I have become far more competent in working on websites. This has involved everything from making case studies to writing blogs, such as the one you are reading just now.

Finally, my favourite part of my job has been becoming integrated with the team. From becoming renowned for my excellent tea-making (and questionable lunch retrieving skills) to always being happy to help around the office when required, I couldn’t have joined a better team for my first job.

Overall, an apprenticeship is absolutely one of the best starts in the world of work anyone can have. It gives you some excellent life experience, as well as giving you the ability to earn a wage while you learn. If my words have inspired you, visit https://www.apprenticeships.scot/ to find out more.
