One of the key divisions within the business here at Worksmart is our commercial team, who are on hand to ensure that all our interior fit-out and refurbishment projects run smoothly. Kieran sat down with Keir Anderson, our Commercial Manager, to talk about his role in the company.
KJ: Hi Keir, what are some of your key responsibilities within Worksmart?
KA: I am responsible for the commercial functions of our projects working along with our operations and estimating department. I am based out of our Edinburgh office and have a key focus on projects in the East of Scotland but I am also involved in projects across the Central Belt.
KJ: How did you enter the world of construction?
KA: I studied Quantity Surveying at Edinburgh Napier University on a day release basis, while working as a trainee surveyor with Balfour Beatty Construction and BAM. This allowed me to gain on the job experience, as well as achieving my honours degree. I joined Worksmart in July 2017 and immediately began working on several high profile projects.
KJ: What does a typical day look like for you?
KA: My typical day involves ensuring smooth operation of my projects, which can entail visiting sites, cost reporting, placing sub-contract orders and liaising with our clients and supply chain.
KJ: There have been significant skill shortages in the UK interiors sector. How do you feel we can improve this?
KA: It is absolutely crucial to make the world of fit-out and refurbishment as appealing to the younger generation as possible from an early age. I believe the industry as a whole needs to improve and increase its engagement with children and schools to demonstrate the opportunities that are available within our industry.
KJ: Finally, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
KA: During my free time I like to enjoy family time with my young daughter, watching sport and travelling.
