The FIS Scottish Awards 2017

On Friday the 6th of October, some of the Worksmart team attended the FIS Scottish Contracting Awards, which turned out to be a great day for our team. Worksmart won two Gold awards and one Silver award at this prestigious ceremony hosted at the Principal Hotel in Edinburgh. We entered into four different categories at this year’s event, against some strong competition.

The first category we entered was the Judges Award. This is a very unique category, which is designed for projects that would not apply to any other categories. We entered our works at the Gaiety Theatre in Ayr, which had previously won an award at the 2017 FIS Contractors Award in July, which are awards which cover the entire UK interior market. This was an intense 30 week refurbishment process in which we transformed a derelict theatre into a wonderful looking functioning theatre. This project was completed in partnership with the architects at Austin Smith Lord, and won a Gold award in the Judges Award category, presented to one of our Directors Paul Cravens and George Reynolds, a senior partner at the architects.

The second category we entered one of our interior fit-out and refurbishment projects was the Glazed Partitioning category. We entered our works at Glasgow Housing Association’s Kingsway Court office in Glasgow. This require several phases of works, with full formation works taking place before any internal fit-out works could start. We created new office space and meeting areas, with Komfort glazed partitioning being used to create dividing solutions and allow for privacy, as well as creating a high-spec end result in both the office facilities and meeting spaces. This project – completed with Creanor Consultancy as the architect – won a Gold Award, giving us our second award for the night.

The third award category we entered was the Interior Fit-Out category, which can be entered with any interior fit-out or refurbishment project. We entered our works at Ellis Whittam, which we completed in conjunction with c2 Concepts. The project required for a new office to be created in Glasgow’s St Vincent’s Street, and involved the transformation of an empty space into a brand new office completed with glazed partitioning and finished with a furniture package by Bureau+. This fast-track interior fit-out secured a Silver Award, and was presented to both Steve and Mark Alcorn, c2 Concept’s Managing Director.

The fourth and final category we entered was the Apprentice of the Year, where we entered two of our hardworking on-site apprentices, Cameron and Alex. Both have worked incredibly hard throughout the last year on several interior fit-out and refurbishment projects, including the FIS Award-winning projects we have already mentioned. While we may not have won an award, we are very proud of their commitment to Worksmart.

We continually support the FIS awards for several reasons. Firstly, FIS events are a fantastic opportunity to network with a range of likeminded businesses based in the UK and sometimes beyond. This can allow for strong working relationships to be built, possibly giving us more interior projects to work on. Also, by winning awards, we will gain a significant amount of recognition within the interiors sector while spreading the Worksmart name and brand.

Overall, this was a fantastic awards ceremony for the Worksmart team, giving us a huge amount of success and recognition with the interior fit-out and refurbishment market. We are delighted to have received the three awards, and hope for continued success at any of the FIS’ awards ceremonies in the future.

An Interview with Alan Brown of Forza Doors Ltd.

As well as McGarry Flooring (who we discussed in last week’s blog), one of Worksmart’s key suppliers is Forza Doors Ltd. Kieran caught up with Alan Brown, co-owner of Forza, to discuss more about their business.

KJ: Good Afternoon Alan. Firstly, can you tell me a bit about Forza Doors?

AB: Forza was founded by Nick Hare, Philip Duckworth and myself in 2009. We were previously employed by Komfort, where we gained valuable experience of the creation and selling of all different types of doors. When we started in 2009, we had 3 owners and 8 other members of staff. We currently employ 122 members of staff, who operate from a 48,000 sq ft factory and recently turned over £15.5m in the 2016/17 financial year.

KJ: Which services do you provide to consumers?

AB: The most popular services we provide are the manufacture and distribution of timber doors and frames, which are predominantly used in the commercial, healthcare and education sectors. We also manufacture partitioning, fire screens and toilet cubicles, giving us a wide product portfolio to appeal to all markets.

KJ: How did your working relationship with Worksmart begin?

AB: The team at Forza viewed Worksmart as the perfect partner for Scotland. With an established reputation within the interiors sector, we felt that a strong working relationship could be maintained. We previously knew Worksmart’s Managing Director Steve from our time at Komfort, and found him to be very professional and proactive. This allowed for a good working relationship to be quickly established and developed.

KJ: How do you ensure all your jobs meet quality standards?

AB: We are an ISO9001 compliant company, meaning that we have implemented a quality management system. This means the materials we provide on your fit-out and refurbishment projects are of the highest quality. Everyone in our factory is trained in quality, with dedicated Quality Managers. We also have a Total Quality Management System, meaning that the quality of our products are checked at every stage by all staff.

KJ: What has been your favourite job you have worked on with Worksmart?

AB:  We have enjoyed several successful projects with Worksmart since our inception. One project we particularly enjoyed was your works at the NHS’ Woodland View facility in Irvine, in which you installed lots of fire-rated screens. While we are more commonly known for timber doors, it is nice to show our range of fire screens, more information for which is available at

KJ: Finally, why do you enjoy working with Worksmart?

AB: We have always found Steve and the team to have the ability in identifying problems before they become such and work to avoid them. They have a strong understanding of the logistical and technical side of our products, and are always willing to listen to our opinion. Therefore, we will continue to work with Worksmart on several of their fit-out and refurbishment projects in Scotland and throughout the UK. We feel that Worksmart understand fit-out and refurbishment.
